Hey everyone, this is Mark Middlesworth with ErgoPlus. If you’re ready to establish a comprehensive MSD prevention and ergonomics improvement process job number one is to make sure that everyone throughout your organization from leadership on down has a clear understanding of what ergonomics is and how it benefits the business and how it benefits its people.
NIOSH defines ergonomics as, “The science of fitting workplace conditions and job demands to the capabilities and limitations of the working population.” We want to design toward capabilities and strengths of our people and away from limitations and vulnerabilities. “Ergonomics,” NIOSH says, “is an approach or solution to deal with a number of problems with respect to workplace and productivity and efficiency and quality, etc., a number of problems among them work-related musculoskeletal disorders.”
Everyone throughout the organization needs to understand what ergonomics is and the value of valuing ergonomics. The value of knowing how ergonomics benefits the business and its people.
When jobs are designed to match the capabilities of our people, that results in better work being done, better work being done, good for business, and a better experience for the person doing it. Good for business, better experience for the person, good for people. Really the mission is creating a better workplace and better lives for our people.
Ergonomics is good for people
The value of workplace ergonomics is good for people because job tasks are made easier to accomplish when ergonomics are designed into the work station or the work task being performed. Ergonomics is good for people because it reduces fatigue and discomfort for our people and results in fewer injuries. We need to attack the problem at its earliest stage and that’s trying to eliminate unnecessary fatigue that can turn into discomfort that can turn into a loss of function that can turn into a musculoskeletal disorder or an injury.
Ergonomics is good for people because it improves the work experience of our people. If our people come in and the job is easier to perform, it’s user friendly, that’s going to make for a better work experience for them. That’s going to lead to job retention and job satisfaction.
Ergonomics is good for our people because it does enhance our level of satisfaction about coming to work and enhance the quality of our life because after all we do spend a lot of time in the workplace. Ergonomics is also valuable because it’s good for business as well.
Ergonomics is good for business
Ergonomics, when we’re paying attention to health of our people, the safety of our people, and we’re paying attention to ergonomics, it does enhance the company brand. It shows all concerned that the company cares about its people, cares about the work environment, cares about the work experience that their workers come into and to perform every day.
It certainly lowers costs. Companies that implement comprehensive MSD prevention process and ergonomic improvement programs show significant reduction in workers’ compensation costs and other costs tied to that, indirect costs, such as administration, etc.
Ergonomics is good for business because it improves productivity. When jobs are user friendly for our people, that’s going to enhance efficiency and productivity. We’re going to put out better product quality so it does enhance quality if people are tired, if people are frustrated because the job is frustrating, then that’s not going to lead to very good product quality, that’s going to lead to product defects.
Ergonomics is good for business because it just creates better business performance. All kinds of studies have shown that companies that pay attention to ergonomics and health and safety achieve better business performance.
