“If you have a body, you are an athlete.” – Bill Bowerman
It was late Wednesday afternoon and Tim was feeling good. He was tired, but still feeling good. He had just gotten through another tough football practice gearing up for the big game on Sunday.
While he was feeling good overall, he had noticed a little bit of discomfort in his shoulder. While it didn’t seem like a big deal, he thought he better visit the athletic trainer on staff to see what she thought.
After consulting with the athletic trainer, Tim left the team’s facility thinking through his rest/recovery routine for the evening which included a healthy meal, drinking plenty of water, a stretching routine, ice for the shoulder, and a good night’s rest. He had to be ready for practice the next day, after all! Every practice matters a great deal, as coach likes to say.
Meanwhile… a few miles across town, Linda was also feeling good at the end of a long, hard day. She worked at a manufacturing plant on the assembly line. It was a tough job, but she was good at it and enjoyed putting in a solid day of work.
While she was feeling good overall, she noted she was a little more fatigued than usual in her right shoulder. The training provided by her employer kicked in, and she realized she better visit the athletic trainer on staff to see what he thought.

Smart, safe work performance matters a great deal, as the plant safety manager likes to say.
Provide the Highest Level of Care
Professional athletes get the best preventive healthcare imaginable.
And it’s for good reason — it’s because the team’s management staff understands that for them to win games, they need their athletes healthy and performing well. The success of the team depends on the health and performance of each member of the team.
Do you feel the same way about the people (athletes!) inside your organization?
Your organization can adopt this same mindset and approach to prevent the most common and costly injuries in environments where your people work hard for a living — musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). As illustrated in the story above, MSDs are the same common injuries sports teams encounter with their athletes; sprains, strains, tennis elbow, and other musculoskeletal injuries.
Embracing a “workplace athlete” mentality and implementing a workplace athlete program run by an On-Site Certified Athletic Trainer (or what we call an injury prevention specialist) can revolutionize your approach to injury prevention. These programs have a way of changing the mindset and culture of the organization that equips them for world class health outcomes.
It’s about providing the highest level of care for the people (athletes!) whose health and performance are the determining factor in your organization’s success in the marketplace.
Stop Small Issues from Becoming Big Problems
The high-engagement approach of having an on-site injury prevention specialist perfectly positions you to stop small issues from becoming big problems. This approach is just like an athlete going to the athletic trainer provided by a sports team to talk about how to recover from that day’s hard practice to prepare for the next one.
In the event daily wear and tear turns into early signs of excessive fatigue, our injury prevention specialists are there to intervene at the earliest possible time. We are then able to implement ergonomic and individual control methods to lower injury risk and prevent fatigue from developing into an injury and recordable case.
