Preventing Musculoskeletal Injury Through Workplace Design
Do people at work suffer from work-related muscle strains, joint inflammation, back pain, tendonitis, ligament sprains, pinched nerves, carpal tunnel syndrome or rotator cuff syndrome? Do they miss time? These are all examples of musculoskeletal injury. As the name suggests, these are injuries thatinvolve the muscles and the skeleton – basically the parts of the body that make us move. More specifically, these work-related injuries affect muscles, tendons, joints, ligaments, bones, nerves and blood vessels.
Prevent Workplace Pains and Sprains
Workplace pains and strains can be serious and disabling for workers, causing pain and suffering ranging from discomfort to severe disability. The consequences are far reaching and can affect every aspect of a worker’s life. MSDs are also costly for Ontario’s employers. They are the number one reason for lost-time claims reported to the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB), resulting in huge direct and indirect costs for employers.
Avoiding Sprains and Strains to Ensure Workplace Safety
Safety in the workplace is extremely important, but sometimes repetitive job functions cause employees to overlook common safety measures that lead to injury, more specifically, sprains and strains. Practicing preventative measures daily can help employees avoid painful accidents that require time away from work and potentially lost wages for both the employer and the employee.
Ergonomic Risk Factors that Cause Injuries
A risk factor is a working condition that increases the chance of developing a musculoskeletal disorder (MSD). Each of the risk factors described here can cause problems. However, it is usually the case that workers are exposed to more than one risk factor at a time.
